Frequently Asked Questions

I have been in the wedding photography industry 18 years. I have had an interest in photography for many years just as a hobby and when I was bought my first professional grade camera I decided to go to college to learn photography properly. I went to Stafford college part time and passed my City and Guilds 6922 and 6923, it was then I decided that I wanted a change of career and left a lucrative job as a PA to a CEO of a large company to work for minimum wage in an established photography studio in Shrewsbury where I learned all aspects of working wedding photography. Since then I set up my own photography business, been on many photography courses (and still do as there is always something new to learn), tried my hand at all different types of photography from newborns to products, but wedding photography is my love and my passion so now I specialise in just wedding photography.

I use Canon professional mirrorless cameras together with a variety of Canon professional lenses. There is no real right or wrong choices when it comes to camera bodies, I have tried Nikon, Fuji and Sony but I keep going back to Canon as I feel that I can get the best results with this system. I carry two cameras with me on a wedding day with wide angle and zoom lenses to cover any eventuality.
YES! I have back up professional DSLR Canon cameras as well as professional Canon lenses, speed lights and other equipment which I carry with me should my main camera equipment stop working.
YES! Being a full time wedding photographer I have Public Liability insurance, Professional Indemnity insurance and insurance for my very expensive wedding photography kit!
I mainly shoot a mixture of contemporary and classical images on your wedding day. The Contemporary style (also known as Reportage) is a more free-flowing style of photography, a more relaxed and informal approach. I use this for the more candid images of people enjoying the day and for the speeches. The Classical style is a more formal style of photography. It is important to some couples to have some classic posed shots of family and friends. This also works well for larger group shots. I use a mixture of both styles when it come to the couple portraits. You may feel that the classical images aren’t ‘your thing’ believe me when I say your parents and grandparents will love them and you will grow to appreciate them more as the years roll on.
I get asked this a lot as it seems that most people seem to be a bit camera shy (unless they are taking selfies on their phone)!
However, there is no need to worry, I am really friendly and relaxed and I have many years of experience in dealing with couples who are camera shy relaxed so have tricks up my sleeve to make you feel better in front of the camera. I will be there to help you, guide you and put you at ease every step of the way so your photos will look like you are having a fab time!
If you have booked me for a ‘full day’ package I tend to arrive approximately an hour and a half before the ceremony if you are getting ready and the ceremony is at the same place, if not I tend to arrive approximately 2 hours before the ceremony as I add the extra time in for travel. I will usually leave after the first dance (or two or three) if the dance floor is full and people are busting some moves! If you have booked my Simplicity Collection then I will arrive at the ceremony location approximately 15 minutes before the ceremony and stay to when you sit down for your wedding breakfast (usually 2-3 hours).
I do not set a limit on the number of images that I supply from a wedding day as each day is different. I always say that the number of images you will receive will depend on three things: 1. The weather (as if it is raining on your day you may not want to or be able to go out and make full use of the venue or grounds. 2. The length of daylight. If you are having a winter wedding and it is cold and dark by late afternoon then the number of photo opportunities may be less than on a warm summer’s day and 3. Your participation; you may feel at some point in the day you have had enough photos and just want to spend time sat talking with guests or drinking at the bar. This is totally fine as it is your day and you spend the day how you want to spend it, but it may result in less going on and therefore less images. That being said, on a wedding day I will take a lot of images as modern cameras come equipped with fast motor drives, using this allows me to take a number of images of the same thing in quick succession which will usually enable me to pick images where everyone has their eyes open and looking in the required direction. Out of these images there will normally be one or two usable shots. From a full day wedding you will expect to receive in excess of 350 images. If you have booked me for The Simplicity Collection then you can expect to receive in excess of 100 images.
My cameras have dual card slots so it writes the images to both cards as they are taken. In most cases I don’t delete the images from one of the cards until your edited images have been delivered to you, that is one back up. I then copy the cards onto my hard drive and back them up again to a 2nd hard drive. I also back them up at various stages of the editing process. Once your images have been delivered to you I re-use the cards and keep a back up of your edited images for up to 6 months. In some cases I may keep them for longer, but this cannot be guaranteed.
In the 18 years I have been shooting weddings I have never missed one. However, as it is my responsibility to provide you with an alternative photographer if such a matter arises, I am part of a network of experienced wedding photographers who can be called upon should this happen.
Yes please! Wedding photography is hard and thirsty work! I will be on my feet for usually 8-10 hours and will use a lot of energy. However, I do have dietary requirements so it would be very useful to let me know in advance what is on the menu ! Please bear in mind that there will probably be two of us … however it’s only me the with dietary requirements.
No! If you don’t want any balck and white images in your gallery you don’t have to have any. If you decide to book with me then we would discuss your requirements. If you do require black and white images then I will look at the images and through experience will know if they would look better in black and white than they would in colour.
Some of my collections include a 2nd photographer, however if there is not one included and you require one then this would be at an additional cost of £300.00. I have a pool of experienced wedding photographers that I can call upon. I don’t use trainees or photographers that are wanting to gain images for their own portfolios.
Firstly, you would need to completed the enquiry form on my web site. I would then check the date and send you an email with my availability and quotation. We would then arrange a meeting, this could be face to face at my garden studio or via video call (What’s App, Messenger etc) where we would discuss your requirements, I would go through me typical approach to a wedding day and if this would need to be adapted so you get the wedding photographs you require and to see if we are a good fit! If we decide that maybe we aren’t such a good fit then there will be no hard sell from me, we will shake hands, I will wish you well (and mean it) as there is no point in booking a wedding photographer who you don’t feel comfortable with as you will resent spending time with them on your wedding day and won’t love your wedding photos that you receive as each time you look at them you will be reminded of the experience!
If you decide that you would like to book me for your date then you would need to complete and sign a booking form, sign the terms and conditions and pay a £250.00 booking fee, this then reserves me for your date.
Between the date of booking and the wedding date, I will be on hand to answer any questions that you may have regarding any aspect of your wedding day. After being in the industry for the last 18 years I have a wealth of experience and knowledge. We will need to meet again, usually after you have had your final meeting with the venue, when we discuss final timings, who is who in your immediate families and wedding party, any group shots that you would like me to take and anything else you think I need to know.
NO! The price you book at is the price you keep even if you have booked me three years in advance! However, there may be a price increase if there are any significant changes from when you booked, for example, if you have changed your wedding venue, wedding date or require any additional services that were not included when you booked.
Usually, your gallery will be ready 4-6 weeks after your wedding day, there may be the odd occasion when it is a little longer (due to holidays etc) but those are very rare.
You will be given access to an online gallery where you can view the images. There will be a link that you can send to your friends and family so they can see the images too. There will also be an option for them to purchase any images if they wish directly from the gallery. This will save you having to ask your friends and family if they want to purchase any images and you having to collect the month and place the order yourself.
Within the gallery there is the facility for you to choose the images for your wedding album. The first 50 images (or 65 images – depending upon the collection you have booked ) is included within the collection booked, if you require any more images to be included in your album then there will be the option to add more at an additional cost.
If you have booked the digital image only collection your images will be sent to you via a digital download link approximately one week after your gallery has gone live. If you have booked a collection that includes an album your digital download link will be sent to you approximately one week after you have submitted your image choices for inclusion in your album. We used to supply the images on disk, then CD, then DVD, then USB but as the years go on the different types of media and the media readers have become obsolete images can no longer been seen, so we have made the decision just to use digital downloads and then you can download, keep and back up the images on your devices so you can always have access.
Yes and No! If you have given us permission then yes we may well do as it could help us with our marketing and attract new wedding clients. However, this will not be until you have seen your gallery as we think that it is important that the first people to see your images (besides me) is you.
Although the copyright remains with Kim Shaw Photography, you will be granted a licence to print and share for personal use only. The images are not to be shared with your other wedding suppliers unless we have given specific permission to do so or unless your suppliers come directly to us to ask for images. This is because we would need to be credited when they use the images.
How it
Works?

Dedication, experience, trust, skill and quality. I have 18 years of experience as a wedding photographer, so you can be confident in my ability and approach.

Step 1

If you like what you see here on the website, please complete the enquiry form with your details and any questions you may have and I will reply with my availability, the answers to any questions you many have asked and a quotation.

Step 2

If you then decide that you would like to meet so we can discuss everything from my typical approach to the day, your ideas and the way you see your wedding day unfolding, your photography requirements and preferences and the timings of your day etc then you can make an appointment. I can also show you some sample albums of previous weddings so you can see a wedding from start to finish through my eyes. The meeting can take place in my Garden Studio or via video call.

Step 3

After some time to think about it (as you will never be pushed into a decision from me) if you decide if you like me and my work enough to want me to be your photographer on your big day, you will need to complete a booking form, sign the terms and conditions and pay the booking fee. This will then secure me for your date. At this stage you don't have to choose which wedding collection you want to book, that decision can be made at a later date.

Step 4

About 4-6 weeks before your wedding date we meet again (either at my Garden Studio or via video call) where we go through the final timings for your day, who is who in your immediate families and bridal party, and a list of what group shots you would like as well as any other ideas you may have. At this point, if you didn't do so at the booking stage, you should have made the decision on which wedding collection you require as the balance is due to be paid.
